Home to more than 32,000 people, Amherst County was founded in 1761 from the southern half of Albemarle County, and named for the crown governor of Virginia at the time, Sir Jeffrey Amherst. Amherst County took its present shape in 1807 when it, too, was halved, with the northern half becoming Nelson County. It was then that the county seat was relocated to the village of Five Oaks (now called the town of Amherst). Unincorporated communities within the county include Madison Heights and Sweet Briar. |

Tobacco was king in the early years of the county, as families migrated to the area to take advantage of its rich soil. By the late 19th century, however, mixed farming ? particularly apple orchards ? had taken root, while timber, mining and milling also became important in the county's economic growth. Amherst County is often cited as having produced more Confederate soldiers per capita than any other county in the Confederacy, though this may be more anecdote than fact, as substantiating evidence on the Web is scant. Residents and visitors alike are able to enjoy the scenic beauty of Amherst County and take advantage of its numerous opportunities for hiking, camping and fishing, including the Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, George Washington National Forest, James River Heritage Trail and Mount Pleasant Scenic Area. The county is also home to the annual Virginia Garlic Festival, held each fall at Rebec Vineyards in Amherst. Getting to Kia of Lynchburg from Amherst County is as simple as hopping onto US-29 S and crossing the James into Lynchburg. Keep right at the fork, follow signs for US-29 S/US-460 W/Lynchburg/Danville, and merge onto US-29 S/US-460W. Travel 4.6 miles before turning right onto Candlers Mountain Road. Go about a mile, then merge onto US-29 Business S/US-501 N/Lynchburg Expressway via the Danville/Buena Vista ramp. Continue to follow US-501 N/Lynchburg Expressway for 4.7 miles until it becomes Old Forest Road, then travel another 0.7 miles. Our dealership will be on the left at 3400 Old Forest Road. |
