Here are answers to the most frequently asked EV charging questions.
Where Can I Charge My EV in Lynchburg?
As of this writing (July 2024) there are more than 61,000 EV charging stations in the US and more than 95% of US residents live in a county with at least one charging station. The Lynchburg area has far more than one. EV drivers in Lynchburg can take their pick of more than 80 charging stations in total, and nearly 30 DC fast charging stations.
In addition to a wealth of public charging stations, EV drivers can charge at home using Level 1 charging, or have a Level 2 charger installed.
How Much Does EV Charging Cost?
EV charging costs vary based on the battery-capacity of the vehicle and the electricity rates in the area. Appalachian Power offers EV owners lower off-peak rates for charging during the non-peak hours of 8pm to 6am or on the weekends. If you’re comparing the cost of charging to the cost of fueling up a gas-powered vehicle, you’ll find that electric charging generally costs less than gasoline. The average cost of charging an EV is about $0.05 a mile while gasoline currently costs an average of $0.13 a mile.
How Do Charging Stations Work?
Using a charging station is pretty straight-forward. In fact, if you know how to charge a mobile device, you know how to charge your EV. All you need to do is put your car in park and turn of the engine, then plug your charging connector into the charging port. Then it’s just a matter of waiting for the car to be fully recharged.
How Long Does EV Charging Take?
The time it takes to fully recharge your EV depends on two things – how large your battery is, and the charging level you are using. There are currently three charging speed levels.
Level 1 – Level one charging uses a standard household outlet to recharge your vehicle and is the slowest charging method. It can take anywhere from 40 to 60 hours to fully recharge an all-electric vehicle. If this is the charging method you’ve chosen, it’s best to develop a charging schedule that allows you to charge overnight a few times a week so your vehicle is always ready to go when you are.
Level 2 – The second charging method is much faster and can give your vehicle 10-60 miles of range per hour. Using this method, you can fully recharge your vehicle in a single night. You can use a public Level 2 charging port at a station or have one installed in your home.
Level 3 – Level 3 Charging is also known as DC fast charging and can give you up to 100 miles of range in as little as 20 minutes. DC fast charging ports are only available at charging stations.
